Prepaid (micro-sim) 3G Data Plan for iPhone in Australia

Prepaid (micro-sim) 3G Data Plan for iPhone in Australia

Q:
I am going to spend two weeks in Australia next month and would like to find out if the networks in Australia have a micro-sim prepaid data plan for the iPhone?
If so, which is the best?

A:
-rick253
There are three major networks, all of which offer a prepaid micro sim.
They are Telstra, Optus and Vodafone. Various other companies sell prepaid, but will be using one of these three networks. Whether the resellers offer micro sim can vary.
Telstra has the superior network, but can be more expensive.
Vodafone has had various issues, but some people report good reception and others not so good.
Optus in my own experience has the worst reception. At home I often lose the Network completely.
From what I can see all offer data packs, but you may need to combine with a prepaid phone pack. Heavy data use could be expensive.

Telstra network far superior, 29.99 for 3 GB pay as you go Micro Sim…
Pop into a Telstra store.. Need ID (passport etc) and they will activate on the spot and good to go..

If you are only in the bigger cities than the Optus network will be fine as well. Usually Optus resellers will be cheaper than Optus itself. If they don’t offer a micro SIM, just get a pair of scissors ready.
And lastly, if you have a Verizon IPad than it might not work in Australia as it is CDMA.

I’d go with Telstra. Intially picked up a free Vodafone microsim at the airport but had a real hard time trying to register it and buy some data and ultimately failed.
Went into a Telstra store and asked them to activate it, which they did, and worked a charm. Since then have purchased more data and found the process easy.
Have not tried Optus.

Check ‘Yo Skin Before You Wreck ‘Yo Skin

Knowing your skin type — oily, dry, normal, combination, or sensitive — is integral to choosing the appropriate and most beneficial skin-care regimen. Problem is, most women still don’t know exactly what type of skin they have, or, for that matter, what their main skin care concerns should be. The root causes of your skin issues are very different from the symptoms (i.e. you may know that you have acneic skin, but not what specifically is causing the breakouts), and you need to know and treat the cause in order to alleviate the symptoms. Short of hiring an on-call dermatologist, how are you supposed to figure all of this out on your own?

Starting this week, you don’t have to, thanks to DDF. Consultants from the famed dermatological skin care line will be doing a cross-country tour of Sephora stores nationwide, now through February. They’ll be holding one-on-one consultations with consumers where they will be offering a free skin analysis to help you determine what’s really wrong with your skin, plus what you can do to fix it.

Customers can head to DDF’s Facebook page to get the scoop on when the consultants will be in their area, then call their local Sephora to book an appointment. During their consultation, DDF skin specialists will be equipped with a handheld skin evaluation tool, similar to the one used by derms, to evaluate the severity of your wrinkles and pores, and the evenness of your skin tone. The handheld machine, which is hooked up to an iPhone that contains the evaluation software, is held up to your skin, where it takes a reading and rates you on a scale to determine what your biggest problems are. You are then asked a few lifestyle questions to determine any secondary concerns.

Once the tool has read your skin, it will print out an assessment and a personalized protocol, which you can take to a Sephora representative to help you pick out the products that are best for you. Obviously this is not meant to take the place of regular visits to the dermatologist, but if you’re someone who has never had your skin professionally evaluated, this could be a great way for you to get more insight into your skin-care needs. Plus, it’s free, and you can’t beat that!

Do you get regular skin care check-ups or are you a derm virgin?

The Best 6 iPhone eBook Apps

The best iPhone ebook apps have a good selection of modern and classic ebooks, lots of customizable features, and a well-designed interface. So which e-reader apps meet these criteria? In our test of ebook apps, Stanza and Amazon’s Kindle app earn the highest ratings.

1. iBooks

Apple’s entry into the ebook space is very polished. With its excellent typography–especially when combined with the hi-res Retina Display screen, its ability to annotate text, and its flashy page-turning animations, iBooks (Apple, free) a compelling option. While the iBookstore that provides content for it doesn’t have the same selection as Amazon’s Kindle, iBooks offers plenty of great reading via a sophisticated app. Overall rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.

2. Stanza App

It’s not always easy to read on the iPhone’s small screen, but the Stanza app offers the best ebook experience. Not only is the interface simple to use, but it also has lots of customization – you can change the font and formatting to make the pages easier on your eyes. The only downside is that popular new releases are more expensive at Stanza’s partner ebook stores than Amazon.com, but there are tons of free ebooks available from Project Gutenberg. Overall rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.

3. Amazon Kindle for iPhone

If you’re a fan of the latest bestsellers, the Amazon Kindle app has the most competitive ebook prices and widest selection. Most new releases are $9.99, but the purchasing process isn’t the best since you have to switch between the app and the iPhone’s mobile browser to download new ebooks. You can choose various font sizes but can’t switch to a different font. Overall rating: 4 stars out of 5.

4. Nook

The Nook app for iPhone is a major improvement over Barnes & Noble’s earlier effort, called Reader. Nook delivers all the basic reading and customization features you’d expect from a good ebook reading and app and integrates nicely with Barnes & Noble’s webstore. It would be ideal if you could buy books from that store right from the app, but for now, Apple’s in-app purchasing rules may prevent that. Overall rating: 4 stars out of 5.

5. Fictionwise eReader

The Fictionwise eReader app (Fictionwise, Free) is a good choice if you mainly want to read free ebooks from Project Gutenberg. Its ebook store includes popular new releases, but they’re more expensive than Amazon and Barnes & Noble in most cases. I did like that the app lets you change fonts or search through the text, but some of the cover art is a little fuzzy. Overall rating: 3.5 stars out of 5.

6. Classics App

The Classics app has an absolutely gorgeous interface and well-designed ebooks complete with pictures and stimulated page turns (plus sound effects!). Classics is as close to reading an actual book as you can get on your iPhone. Unlike the other ebook apps, you’ll have to pay for this one and it only comes with 23 classic ebooks. The developer promises more books in the future, but it’s not clear how many or when they’ll arrive. Overall rating: 3.5 out of 5.

1G iPod nanos Replaced with 6G Hardware Gratis! Thanks, Apple!

Not so long ago Apple issued a recall on every single first generation iPod nano they built. The reason given was that they might overheat. The long and short of it was that the fear was the old things might burst into flames and Apple didn’t want any of that. No renewed memories of that battery debacle of a few years ago.

apple-nano

The cool part is if you have one of these 1G nanos lying around that doesn’t work – or perhaps that you never use, you can get a free exchange. That means if you have have that original nano (made between Sept. 2005 and Dec. 2006) tossed in your sock drawer you can dig it out and return it. The reason is that Apple is replacing those old and tired nanos with the new hotness that is the 6G nano. It’s not clear if the 6Gs are refurbs or not, but it’s still a great deal.

Just fill out this form and follow the directions to send your old nano in and a new (likely refurb) 6G nano will come your way in about six weeks. That means you can get yourself one of those uber-geeky nano watchbands and have yourself a ball gazing at the free upgrade Apple gave you for Christmas.
